The Section 8 housing list is one of the most well-known government housing assistance programs. Section 8, also known as the Housing Choice Voucher Program, is a HUD assistance program designed to ensure low-income families have access to sanitary, safe, and affordable housing. Rather than complete a HUD application, applicants must apply with their local housing authority.

Eligibility requirements for Section 8 are primarily income-based. Generally, your household’s income cannot exceed 50 percent of the median income for the community to qualify. However, most assistance for this program is provided to families with incomes that do not exceed 30 percent of an area’s median income. Additionally, the program is limited to US citizens and specified non-citizens.

Many Americans wonder if they can submit a Section 8 application online. Unfortunately, you cannot apply for Section 8 online in most counties. However, each housing authority determines the methods of application that they will accept.

If you are found eligible for the Housing Choice Voucher Program, you will either receive aid immediately or your household will be placed on a Section 8 waiting list. Unfortunately, the program is notorious for long lists and lengthy wait times. However, many housing authorities have preferences for aid, such as households with seniors, disabled individuals, or young children in the home. Additionally, you are allowed to apply with more than one housing authority, and doing so may help your family receive assistance more quickly.

Once there are Section 8 openings, your family will be removed from the Section 8 housing list and you can begin to receive vouchers. These vouchers are issued directly to approved landlords to reduce the amount of rent your family will be expected to pay each month. The amount that the housing authority provides depends on a household’s size and income. If approved for Section 8 benefits, your family will be responsible for finding Section 8 houses for rent. Therefore, you will need to choose an apartment or house that has been approved for the Section 8 program.

If you are approved for Section 8 low-income housing, you will need to continue to meet eligibility requirements set by the housing authority. One of these requirements is to report any changes to your household, such as someone moving in or out, and changes to your household’s income. Additionally, you will need to notify your housing authority if you intend to move to another approved property.
